The most recent lockdown has taken its toll on our physical and mental health and I’m sure we can all agree that we could use a little rest and relaxation. Now that things are starting to open up, a camping trip is an excellent way to get relief from everyday stresses, deepen your relationship with nature, and get in touch with your authentic self. For those of you who may not enjoy traditional camping, you can connect with nature without forgoing life’s luxuries through Glamping. In case you’ve never heard of it, glamping is camping with amenities and comforts that are not usually used when camping (such as beds, electricity, and access to indoor plumbing).
Both camping and glamping are excellent forms of retreat for mindfulness and healing. Being in nature has been proven to reduce anger, fear, and stress and increase pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.
Some of the ways to take advantage of camping to foster more mindfulness:
Take advantage of fresh air for breathing exercises. A simple one is simply breathing all the way down into the belly, filling the lungs fully for a count of five and then releasing fully for a count of five. Deep breathing alone can reduce stress and anxiety and increase energy. Add to that a healthy dose of fresh oxygen and you’ll be feeling ready to take on the world!
Walk with awareness. Even the simple act of walking can become a meditative practice. You can read how by checking out our Walking Meditation article here.
Do some Yoga or Mindful Stretching (click to check out our article on Mindful Stretching). When surrounded by magnificent natural scenery, your yoga sessions or other relaxation practices will increase the production of “happy hormones” and take your activity to another level.
Try Grounding. direct physical contact with the electrons on the Earth’s surface can have a positive effect on human health. Unfortunately, living in cities and always wearing shoes outside has separated us from these benefits. According to research, the simple act of walking barefoot in the grass can reduce anxiety significantly. Reconnection with the Earth’s electrons has been found to improve mood, promote sleep quality, and reduce chronic fatigue. It can also reduce inflammation, blood pressure, chronic muscle, and joint pain. So lose the shoes and frolic in the grass!
